Like many new churches, Continuum Church began as the offshoot of an existing congregation. Our lead pastor was serving as the young adult minister of Evangel Temple Assembly of God in Gahanna, OH. While working at his desk on a Monday afternoon, he felt like he should drive downtown and pray. Not one to be overly mystical, he nonetheless responded by driving from the suburb to the city.
After following Columbus’ High St. for several miles, our lead pastor sensed an interest in exploring the newly constructed South Campus Gateway. He located the parking garage and walked to the Gateway Film Center. Stepping into the theater’s foyer, he perceived a strong impression that the location would become a spiritual destination.
The prompting to start a new congregation in the space proved amazingly prescient. When he approached the theater managers about this possibility, they said that for some time they had been looking for a congregation to rent their facilities on Sundays. Our lead pastor could not believe that he had been directed to a place looking for a spiritual group to set up shop.
Before any of these events were shared with the leaders of Evangel Temple, our lead pastor’s boss asked him if the young adult ministry had ever considered starting a new location. This confirmation prompted our leaders to develop a plan for starting a new congregation. An early step involved partnering with Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, a student group at the Ohio State University.
After months of prayer and planning, the Ohio Ministry Network agreed to serve as Continuum Church’s parent organization and became a trusted source of funding and support. On October 14, 2007 twenty-nine people met in the Gateway Film Center for the first gathering of Continuum Church. Over the next several years, friends from Springfield, MO relocated to Columbus to join the church’s leadership team. Since that time, people from all over Columbus have become part of our congregation.
