Is your church liberal or conservative?
We take liberal to mean generous and open. We are quite liberal in our understanding of God’s grace towards us and our openness to all types of people. There is no end to God’s love for us, and there should be no limits on our love for others.
We take conservative to mean preserving and protecting. We are quite conservative when it comes to preserving the message that God loves people and we should, too. We will never stop encouraging protection from self-destructive decisions and unhealthy situations.
What about politics?
We are proud to say that on any given Sunday, you are as likely to sit next to a Republican as a Democrat. We have Greens and Libertarians, vegetarians and meat eaters, Caribbean immigrants and self-identified rednecks, pacifists and gun owners, atheists and believers—and everything in between. We believe that God’s agenda transcends our ways of dividing people. If you’re looking for a church of people who agree with you on every point, you will be disappointed. If you want to engage people with a variety of opinions and outlooks, you will be thrilled.
What about the Bible?
We are both conservative and liberal when it comes to the Bible. We are quite conservative in honoring its message. We take the Bible seriously when it tells us to adopt Jesus’ approach to life. But we are also liberal in that we are willing to listen to new perspectives on interpreting and applying the Bible’s message to our lives. We don’t believe that any human understanding of God completely exhausts what can be known about the divine. This helps us to drink deeply from the historic Christian faith while resisting the temptation of religious arrogance.
